WOT2Grow Community Orchard

Having built three bee hives in June a small colony of around 500 bees has been installed in one of them. Apparently they are settling in well and we hope we will be able to fill the other two hives this summer.

The continued wet weather has made the grass grow at an alarming rate so it is a huge thank you to the mowers who have kept things under control. We have continued weeding on a twice weekly basis and the results are obvious so now it is just keeping on top of them. Don't forget that everyone is welcome to go to the orchard at any time and if some weeds are pulled up at the same time then that would be brilliant.

We have almost completed mulching which makes a huge difference to moisture retention and weed control. Being such light soil, unlike most of our gardens, it is really important to retain as much rain as possible.

Not only has it been wet but also windy so a lot of tying in of canes has been done and the removal of small, sappy branches from the trees that have been snapped in the wind.

The canes and bushes are generally growing well with the first harvesting starting shortly however it is likely to be a fairly small crop this year. We need some sun!!!
