Boules Competition for the Gardner cup

Nearly 40 people came along to the Village Hall on Sunday, July 13th to join in our French Lunch and Boules Competition to decide the winner of the prestigious Gardner Cup. We arranged the weather to have a short shower in the morning to settle the dust and then it improved markedly.

The Pate, selection of cheeses and salads were eagerly consumed by the attendees and these treats were topped off with some lovely apple tarts.

The new league style Boules competition itself was keenly fought with no quarter asked or given. There were many close fought games with skills improving all afternoon with the greater number of games played. The semi-finals were tense, low scoring affairs but 2 teams fought through to the final and they were Iain & Eileen MacPherson versus Belinda & Adrian Marklew.

Iain’s team had endured a challenging route to the final, beating, amongst others the team from Tysoe (previous years winners) and the inspired pairing of Myrtle Knight and John McKail. The final was played in front of a near-capacity crowd, most of whom were on their feet with excitement (Note to committee – more chairs needed next year). Eileen threw a wonderful curved ball, Belinda countered with a thrilling drop shot and Iain & Adrian kept plugging away. Finally, Adrian & Belinda coolly slotted home the winner; a foretaste of the World Cup result later in the day and were pleased to be presented with the Gardner Cup.

Thanks to all who came along and to the committee & partners for all their hard work.
