More Garden Club

Visit to the Studios of James Butler RA. OBE.

On Friday, 10th. October, members of the Garden Club spent a fascinating afternoon visiting the workshop and studios of James Butler at Radway.

Jim is arguably the top classical Sculptor in Britain at present and his work can be seen, not only in Britain, but in America and many European & African countries. In viewing his figures, many much larger than life size, one immediately sees why they are commissioned internationally. His attention to detail allied to his fantastic talent is amazing.

We were guided by Jim, a most modest, amusing and unassuming raconteur (who had a story for every sculpture) and met figures from the past and present, amongst whom were Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, the Queen Mother, President Jomo Kenyatta, Thomas Payne, the Young Dancer and the Girl with the Flowered Hat.

Also there were smaller, but touching versions of his many Memorials to the Fallen, such as The Green Howards' D. Day Memorial, The Croix Rouge Farm Memorial and the Memorial to the Fleet Air Arm.

Besides his larger pieces, Jim has been commissioned by the Royal Mint to design the Royal Seal of the Realm, the Jubilee Coin and the 50 pence piece commemorating Roger Banister's 4 Minute mile.

This was an afternoon not to be missed!
