ICS - Emily Goodman

On the 7th February I am going to Tanzania to work on a sustainable development programme for 10 weeks. I will team up with Tanzanian volunteers to tackle some of the problems facing the local community, after getting a place on the government funded International Citizen Service (ICS).

In order to take part on this placement, I had to raise a minimum of £800, so Alice and I took part in the Oxford Half Marathon in October. We managed to reach the target through sponsorship and are extremely grateful to everybody who contributed.

ICS allows young people aged 18-25 to contribute to long-term development projects in countries like Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and Nepal.  The scheme offers young people the chance to develop personally and learn about team working and leadership on projects that are of genuine value to communities around the world.

The project I’m working on is run by the development charity, Raleigh International and aims to improve access to safe water and sanitation in local communities. I’m really excited to get out there.

If you would like to see what I’m up to whilst I’m out there, see the Tanzanian blog at http://www.raleighinternational.org/ri-blogs/raleigh-tanzania
